Working with Fear in a Fearsome Time: Lessons from the Bhayabherava Sutta

Fear: “A brief, intense emotional response to an immediate present threat, triggering a physical fight-or-flight response.”

Dread: “An anticipated, lingering sense of inevitability about an unavoidable future danger or event, often accompanied by a heavy, sinking physical sensation.”

Fear (Pali bhaya) and dread (bherava) are familiar emotions for many of us, and increasingly present in a time when there seems to be so much to be fearful about. Instead of denying or avoiding them, we can face our fear and dread lovingly and courageously, using their energy to help us respond to the challenges we face in ways that benefit us and the world.

Join Zuisei for an online program on Saturday, September 19 online at the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies. In this half-day class Zuisei will draw on teachings from the Bhayabherava Sutta (Fear and Dread), as well as a variety of Buddhist contemplative practices, to show the relationship between our thoughts and actions to magnify or soften our fear, and to cull tools to work with it in skillful ways.

This dana program is freely offered in the spirit of generosity. Any donation you can offer to the teacher and to the Sati Center to continue making these teachings available is greatly appreciated.
